The Back Shop, 32 Exchequer Street, Dublin, has been designing and selling products for the relief and prevention of back pain for over 25 years. Its core business, the manufacture of custom made office, home, and car seat moulds that guarantee perfect posture, is hugely successful; ten thousand back pain customers, nine and a half thousand now sitting pain free.
Back Injury
The business was started by Colm Campbell, a Chartered Engineer, who at sixteen years of age injured his back playing rugby. He continued to play contact sport throughout his twenties, suffering regular bouts of back pain. Over 25 years ago he stood up in work to answer a telephonic call, hit the ground in agony, and was taken unconscious by ambulance to hospital with a ruptured disc.

He refused an operation after witnessing his bedside neighbour being in greater pain after his operation. Helped by his wife he left hospital, researched back pain, its causes and prevention, discovered bad posture is the main cause, made a simple support for his car and some nine weeks after leaving hospital was able to drive for 30 minutes in bearable pain.
Spinal System-S
He then invented Spinal System-S, the measuring machine that gives the information to make seating guaranteeing the least possible pressure in the intervertebral discs. He is now completely pain free and constantly thinks of his inspired decision to refuse an operation. Had he gone under the knife he would now be in pain. He has personally interviewed 2,000 people who have had back surgery. The success rate is less than 1%. In his book “The Engineering Solution to Suffering Back Pain” he quotes the findings of a renowned UniversityMedicalSchoolin the USAwhich states “The actual proportion of all back pain patients who are surgical candidates is only 2 percent.”

The objective, apart from making chairs for pain free sitting, is to provide a welcoming haven where back sufferers can come, talk about their back problems, and seek advice on how the large selection of back supports, pillows, support belts, etc can help their particular needs. All these products are sold on the basis of sale or return. A by-product of visiting the shop is that many back sufferers, who arrive in states of despair, leave with renewed hope after listening to a team member explaining about back pain, its causes and prevention. This information is essential to combat back pain. The sad thing is that most people reading this have no knowledge of the subject.
